How to Password-Protect a PDF (And How to Unlock One)
Encrypt PDFs with a password to protect sensitive data, or unlock restricted PDFs when you have the password.
Whether you need to lock down a confidential report or open a password-protected PDF you've forgotten the key to, this guide covers both sides - encrypting and unlocking PDFs online.
How to Password-Protect a PDF
- Open the Encrypt PDF tool
- Upload the PDF you want to protect
- Enter a strong password
- Click "Encrypt" and download the secured file
The encrypted PDF will require the password every time someone tries to open it. This is the best way to protect sensitive financial documents, legal contracts, medical records, or personal information.
How to Unlock a PDF
- Open the Unlock PDF tool
- Upload the locked PDF
- Enter the password (you must know the correct password)
- Download the unlocked version with restrictions removed
This removes printing restrictions, copy restrictions, and open passwords. You must know the original password - this tool does not crack or bypass encryption.
When to Encrypt vs. Redact
Encryption prevents unauthorized access to the entire document. If you need to share the document but hide specific information (like social security numbers or account details), use PDF Redaction instead. Redaction permanently removes content while keeping the rest visible.
Tips for Strong PDF Passwords
- Use at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
- Avoid common words or personal information
- Use a different password for each document
- Store passwords in a password manager, not in the same email as the PDF
All encryption and decryption happens securely. Your files and passwords are never stored on our servers.
